Familia de Barcelona

Bruno 3

While Bruno is much bigger now at 9 months old, he was a tiny tiny one at one month!  Bruno was just out of the hospital a few days before we left to come back, and so I had some photographing to catch up on (since we had much more time with his brother Eric).

Can't wait to see Bruno and Eric again in a few weeks...they are just the cutest nephews one could ask for!  Here are a couple of more recent photos of the two of them (courtesy of my mother-in-law):

Merry Christmas at the Ponderosa Cabins! [Catch Up]

Ruidoso 14

During my visit to El Paso with my mom and sisters, we took a small roadtrip to Ruidoso, New Mexico.  Grace reserved a cabin for us at the Ponderosa Cabins.  These cabins were nothing fancy, but we sure enjoyed it!  Kind of a mix of old worn down, and fun kitschy retro.

Ruidoso 1
The expanses around the highway on the way up to Ruidoso were great.  Maybe not amazing for everyone, but for myself, who is surrounded by towering concrete/brick/glass skyscrapers every day, this was terrific!

Ruidoso 2

Ruidoso 3
We stayed in Cabin 10 - the outdoor front porch looks inviting - and I'm sure it's a lovely place to hang out when it's not winter!

Ruidoso 4
The kitchen - kind of reminded me of my grandma's kitchen in her 1950s Orland bungalow house.

Ruidoso 5
One of the two bedrooms - love the formica night stands and the cool lamps :)  (The beds were stiff, but reasonable for the one night we were there)

Ruidoso 8
The fireplace!  we decorated for Christmas!

Ruidoso 9

Ruidoso 10
Mom enjoying her cocktail in a wine glass.  We were limited to the dishes they provided in the cabin...can you believe they didn't have martini glasses?

Ruidoso 11
Playing a surprisingly complicated game of "A Christmas Story" themed yahtzee.

Is that mom, asleep at the hearth?  Let's see what kind of fun we can have...

We had a fun evening - made dinner, watched Christmas movies, opened gifts and "playing yahtzee" (that's in quotation marks because I don't feel like I ever got the hang of that particular game).  It was a nice cabin, and I think wholly fitting for our little adventure. I would love to go back sometime!

Enjoying Some Family Time

Had some fun taking photos of Eric tonight.  With fingers crossed that Bruno is better tomorrow - I will be taking photos of that kid like it's nobody's business!  It's been really nice to have this family time here in Barcelona...we're gonna miss these little guys when we go back to NYC in a few days.

Cannon Beach Weekend Part 2: Family Time

 Cannon Beach 1
At the Sleepy Monk Coffee shop in Cannon Beach.

The second weekend in September Grace was finishing up her leave from base.  She had spent some time in Seattle with Mariam, and mom had flown out to Seattle again to visit Grace as well.  Lucky for me, I had enough airline miles to get a ticket to fly out to the west coast for a brief four day weekend with my mom and sisters.  We knew that there was a good chance that this would be the last time all four of us could be together before grace deploys, so it was important for me to be able to join them.

I flew out on a thursday night after work, and arrived to Portland OR around 11:00pm.  Mariam and Grace picked me up from the airport and we drove the last couple of hours to the coast.  I was almost deliriously tired by the time we got there, but it was such a terrific ride!  We drove along a winding, two lane highway, with massive pine trees lining each side of the road.  And if you looked up to the sky above the trees, all you could see was an amazing blanket of stars in the dark night.  The sort of thing I crave and miss sometimes while living in the city.

We kept the weekend pretty leisurely.  We got up on Friday, not too early, and had coffee and a bite to eat for breakfast from a coffee shop near our hotel room, and then took a walk along the beach and into the town.

Cannon Beach 2
Mmmm, espresso.  (Eda - I think you would like it here!)

The mist was very heavy, but cleared up later in the afternoon.

Cannon Beach 9
There were all sorts of birds around Haystack Rock, and then around the rocks in the tidal pool there were all sorts of living creatures, including these sea urchins (I think that's what they were - if you are reading this and know that they are something else, let me know!).

Cannon Beach 11
Mariam and Grace examining a "severed finger", that actually turned out to be something more innocuous and ocean related....

Later in the evening we returned to the beach to build a bonfire and roast marshmallows.  It was something Mar and I had talked about on our first visit to Cannon Beach back in July.  We stocked up at the store on goodies to eat (and drink!) and got a bundle of wood and some fire starters (seriously a good thing we got this!).
Cannon Beach 12

It took some time to get the fire going, mainly on account of the wind...and it came down to us tearing up the cardboard graham cracker box to keep the flame long enough for lighting the fire starter.  But we got it going and it was terrific!

An eager seagull, who we had nicknamed pickles earlier in the day, was lurking - waiting for Grace to spare a morsel of s'more...
Cannon Beach 16
I think pickles eventually gave up on us giving him any food...and eventually left us alone.

It was a perfect evening.  The beach was cool, chilly and damp, but the fire was warm and the company was awesome.  We're lucky to have had such a terrific time to hang out together.

Saturday we walked around the small city a bit more, stopping in some of the stores that we had missed the day before, and then we packed up and headed out to return to Seattle.  On the way back we hit up every antique store  and thrift store we came across, and  I do mean EVERY one of them!
Cannon Beach 20
This was one of the cooler ones.

And then of course, given that blackberries are ALL OVER the place in Oregon and Washington, I was really wanting to stop for pie.  Mariam remembered a great roadside diner/rest stop and so we pulled in there and all of us ordered some pie.

We made it back to Seattle in the late evening, and ordered chinese food for dinner and just spent the night goofing around Mariam's apartment.  It was so nice to have that weekend time with my mom and sisters.  We were all sad that Mom and I had to leave the next day (mom in the morning, me in the afternoon), but we had so much fun that we said we would have to make Cannon Beach happen more regularly.

Catch Up: She puts the "Grand" in Grandma!

Visit with Grandma 6
At the very end of February, Felipe and I took a weekend to visit my grandma Hall who lives in Orlando, Florida. It had been much much too long since I had seen her in person last - and while I talk to her frequently over the phone - it's just not the same. So we flew down to Orlando on Friday afternoon and stayed in one of the guest rooms at her retirement community until Monday morning.

Visit with Grandma 1
Grandma was quite pleased to cook us chicken and pilaf for dinner the first night we were in town - and even had strawberries and pound cake for dessert. :)

Visit with Grandma 2
Of course we got our usual games of backgammon in.

Visit with Grandma 3
And don't forget kings in the corner!

Visit with Grandma 4
Most of the time we just sat and chatted. We did take a short walk down to Lake Eola - which is only a few short blocks from where she lives. And she gave us a tour of her building - it seems like a really wonderful place. We also had breakfast in the dining room on the main floor and met several other nice residents and staff. I'm so glad that grandma is so happy where she's living now. I know it was a big adjustment for her several years ago when she sold her home.

Visit with Grandma 5

Visit with Grandma 7

I hope to see her again soon - we may try to make it down for another weekend visit. Grandma will be celebrating her 95th birthday this coming June too!
