Hollowe'en is coming soon....

Hallowe'en.

The New York Public Library has a fantastic collection of Halloween postcards on their flickr stream. I've picked some of my favorites here...

Hallowe'en pleasures.

The witch.

Hallowe'en.

We plan on doing our usual Halloween pumpkin carving and movie night, this year, in addition to the Vincent Price House on Haunted Hill, we'll watch The Shining too! I'm looking forward to the roasted pumpkin seeds, and Felipe is looking forward to the spiced cider. Happy autumn everyone.

Postcrossing - Batch Two

Brasil Front

Brasil Back
Yay! My first Brasilian postcard! I'm really looking forward to the time when I can visit Brasil with Felipe and his family. This card comes from Weslley in Vitória, Espírito Santo, which is a little north of Rio de Janiero. This city is apparently on a small island - which stays linked to the mainland by six bridges, you can see in the postcard that this is the Third Bridge. Thanks for the card Wellsley, I can't wait to visit Brasil...maybe I'll come for the 2016 summer Olympics!

My second postcard was from Florida:

Florida Back
Now Florida I have been to - my grandmother lives in Orlando and so I've had the pleasure of visiting Florida a couple of time - although there are many areas that I would still like to see. I'd love some day to go to the Keys. Thanks Judy for the beautiful card...makes me wish I were somewhere tropical at the cold start of this autumn season!

Postcrossing - Batch One

There is a wonderful site called Postcrossing that facilitates postcard "semi" pen pals (semi in the sense that you aren't corresponding repeatedly with only one person, but rather sends a new card to a new person each time). Basically you register on the site and then request an address to send to. They send you and address and then send your address to someone else. The site keeps track of all the cards by tracking numbers - determining how long each card takes to travel to it's destination, how far the cards travel and so on.

Here are the cards from my first batch! (My address is blurred out for obvious purposes)

Australia

This looks like a fascinating creature! If Thorny Devils did survive in captivity I might be inclined to have one!

Canada

Canada Back
This card is from Canada - I also happen to love Jean-Jacques Sempé - his illustrations are some of my favorite from the New Yorker Magazine.

Germany

Germany Back
This looks like a wonderful place to study! How historic! I'm looking forward to someday going to Germany and seeing some of wonderful cities there.

Finland

Postcards In Honor of Britain

So Prince Harry is visiting New York City and I thought that I would share a couple of cards that my mom brought back from London for me almost a decade ago! Greetings from HRH Prince Elizabeth II:

and you can't forget his father, Prince Charles!

I'll keep my eyes open if I see him, although that might be difficult - I don't think visiting our apartment is on his itinerary!

Interesting Facts (per wikipedia):

In 1930 Dalí and Gala would rent a small fisherman's cabin in a nearby bay at Port Lligat. He bought the place, and over the years enlarged it, gradually building his much beloved villa by the sea. (the one pictured)

Dalí and Gala once dressed up for a masquerade as the Lindbergh baby and his kidnapper.

Dalí designed the Chupa Chups logo in 1969.

Worked with Alfred Hitchcock on his movie Spellbound
