Happy Birthday to You!

Felipe 111509

I wanted to find something clever and witty to say here...but alas, I have nothing! I can never claim to be a poet, that is for sure.

All I wish here is to wish Felipe the best birthday ever! And I think it's true...most things in life (love, friendship, wine, cheese...) get better with age. May you have many more (happy) birthdays, and some tres leches cake to come...

Pizza de Familia

We had a nice evening making pizza with Felipe (well...he's the master, he just let us try a little bit). Caught a bit of it on video, see below:

Felipe said the last pizza was the best he's made outside of his pizza class where they had the super fancy ovens. It was pretty good...although I like to think part of that is my homemade sauce ;)

I'll say it - I was pretty good at this!

And Primitivo too...look at Felipe's expression!

Snapshots from the Past: Mariam and Rupen

Mariam and unknown
Mariam and possibly a family member (Mariam on the right).

Some more wonderful old family photos from the project I'm working on. My Great Grandparents came to the United States through New York City in the very late 1800s. Here are some of the old photos of Mariam and Rupen. Unfortunately, all the people that might possibly be able to tell me about these photos have passed away...so many remain a mystery. Label your photos!!!

What Luck I Have!

Rainy Park
Down pour in Central Park.

Today was one of those days that got darker and darker, signaling the weather we had to come. As I left work I could feel the humidity, like swimming through the air. I waited at the bus stop, with some added delay due to traffic issues, and eagerly got on the bus when it pulled around the corner. Three stops in, it poured. And I mean poured so hard it sounded like the bus was under pellet gun attack, and the lightning so close the sound and the flash were startling. It was an amazing flash storm, one that apparently caused a great deal of damage in Brooklyn and even had the greater New York City area under tornado warning (only the second time I recall since moving out here five years ago). To my great fortune, as the title of this post suggests, by the time the bus arrived to my stop the rain had almost completely ceased, hurray!

Other luck would have it that I've been very happy to have had some visitors recently. This last weekend we had a great time visiting with our friend Laurence who was in town from Paris. She arrived Friday evening of last week and we had a great weekend - dined out a bit, went shopping together. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Additionally, my Aunt Diane was in town with my Uncle Paul for some business related travel. She managed to sneak a night in for us, so that we could have dinner together. Uncle Paul was headed to the Mets game with my cousin, and she was more than happy to come visit with me instead of sit at the game (made me happy too!). She arrived to my apartment around 7:00pm and we chatted for a bit before heading to the Times Square area to have dinner with Felipe at Un Deux Troix.

It was so nice to have dinner and hear stories. But not only that, to share a little bit of my New York City life with some family. I don't have much extended family visiting here in the city, and sometimes miss that a great deal.

And the visitors will continue. This weekend Laurence will be back in town again, and this time Sylvain will join her too, and we've not seen him since our last visit to Paris in January. AND (haha) directly after that, Felipe's parents will arrive Monday morning after a month long road trip around the Southwest. We're really looking forward to hearing all of their stories and seeing the pictures from the amazing places they went. So I may be busy for the next two weeks (we also have Felipe's birthday and our anniversary on the horizon), but I will try to keep up!

Snapshot from the Past: First Day of Class

First Day of Kindergarten
First Day of Kindergarten - 1987

Mom took this photo on my first day of school in 1987. I started attending half day kindergarten, and I remember loving it. I don't think I was ever that child who cried when her parents dropped her off at school...I remember being really interested in the big group of kids sitting on the rug in front of the easel.

Also, on a small side note - I LOVED that folder. It was so cool how it was shiny and with all the graphic patterns. So 80s.

Crazy Fire!

westside fire 7
Holy smokey fire outside our window!

There is some three alarm fire happening just across the street from our building - aparently there is something happening at the Department of Sanitation, and possibly a diesel fuel tank may be on fire!

Westside Fire 1
Felipe and I saw the plume of smoke as we were walking home from some errands. Unfortunately, it was at that time that I remembered that our window was open about a foot and the 20 mph winds were blowing that smoke right towards out building.

This is what it looked like when we finally got to near our apartment building.
